As we celebrate 100 years of the Clark Library, we’re looking to our past to inspire our future.
For our centennial, we’re reimagining one of the library’s most memorable symbols: the owl. Inspired by the ornate owl featured on the library’s original bookplate, our new centennial logo also draws on a remarkable piece of our collection, an owl designed for the library by longtime Disney animator and illustrator Vance Gerry.
Gerry, whose work included The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, The Black Cauldron, and Hercules, created an owl with a timeless, woodcut-like character that echoes the library’s history while giving our centennial a distinctive new identity.
The new logo will be unveiled September 25 as part of the opening of a special exhibition, “Private Passions, Public Legacies: William Andrews Clark Jr. and the Making of Los Angeles,” exploring the history of William Andrews Clark Jr. and his impact on Los Angeles.
