Bruce Whiteman, Clark Librarian Emeritus
For a quarter of a century, Bruce Whiteman’s program notes have informed, amused, and delighted audiences at Chamber Music at the Clark concerts. Bruce served as Head Librarian at the Clark from 1996-2010, and while he was hired for his knowledge of rare books and the book trade, his deep knowledge of chamber music and its historical and cultural context led to him joining the Music Committee, the group charged with choosing ensembles and repertoire. After a few years Bruce realized that the concerts could benefit by having program notes, as attendees who were music lovers but did not necessarily have music training might appreciate some help in listening to compositions that may not be familiar to them. With the support of the Center and Clark’s Director, Peter Hanns Reill, Bruce began writing his richly informative and vivid program notes in Fall 1999. Although Bruce left his position at the Clark Library in 2010, he continues to serve on the Chamber Music Committee and write notes for the Chamber Music at the Clark series to this day. We are indeed fortunate that Bruce has agreed to continue to contribute in these capacities, as he is especially beloved by faithful concertgoers for his extraordinary program notes.
