Through cases involving the Spanish Inquisition and printing licenses, this talk examines how celestial authority was constructed and negotiated in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Spain in relation to institutional scrutiny, social reputation, and expertise.

Adela McKay is a Ph.D. candidate in Hispanic Languages and Literatures at UCLA. Her research focuses on early modern Spanish literature and culture, particularly the relationship between astrology, and intellectual authority in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Spain.
