From its development as the most expensive and exclusive neighborhood in Los Angeles to its role in legal battles over racially exclusive covenants, its rise as a center for Black business and culture, and its later economic challenges and ongoing revitalization, West Adams provides a fascinating window into Los Angeles history.

This small group walking tour explores that history through architecture and the lives of individuals and organizations that have called West Adams home. Topics include: residential architecture (including stunning Victorian and Craftsman homes as well as unique Adobe, Mid-Century Modern, and Queen Anne styles), urban development, the people who lived and live here (wealthy elites, Hollywood stars, social activists, etc.), and the many educational and philanthropic organizations that have been headquartered here.

The tour covers three miles on city sidewalks and streets with two short uphill sections. Walkers should wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Participants may also want to bring water, a hat and/or umbrella, and sunscreen. Children twelve and up are welcome when accompanied by an adult. The tour takes approximately two hours.

This tour is curated and led by Don Pestana, a native of Southern California and a retired educator. He has a love for hiking, history, and urban and nature exploration. He spends his winters walking all over L.A. and leading tours for the Los Angeles Conservancy. He spends his summers at a High Sierra summer camp introducing children to the joys of wilderness backpacking.

This tour is free to attend. Attendance is limited to 12 participants and advance registration is required. Date and availability is subject to change or cancellation due to weather conditions. The registration form will be posted here approximately one month in advance of the program.
